Regions of Knowledge
Launched by the Research Directorate-General of the European Commission in August 2003 at the request of the European Parliament, the Regions of Knowledge Pilot Action promoted the active involvement of local players in designing and shaping regional knowledge development models. Fourteen pilot projects were selected to help build or improve regional research and innovation strategies; strengthen regional public-private partnerships; lay down links between researchers, companies and financial institutions; and promote networking between technological innovators in various European regions. Because of the success of the pilot action, it was decided to launch a similar activity, ‘Regions of Knowledge 2’, under the Sixth Framework Programme. An additional 18 projects were launched in 2006 with the aim to promote increased and improved regional investment in research and development through mutual learning, coordination and collaboration between regional policies and initiatives.
