Region Profile

The region of Salzburg is Austria’s fifth largest region. Bordering Tyrol, Carinthia, Styria, Upper Austria, Italy and Germany (Bavaria), the region covers an area of 7,154 km².

Due to its favourable economic situation and quality of life the region saw a population growth of 6.8% from 1990 to 2001, well above the national average (3.0%).

Services account for more than two thirds of Salzburg’s GDP. The secondary sector accounts for less than one third, while agriculture and forestry contribute with less than 2%. Changes in the GDP - pattern and employment figures, illustrate the continuing tendency of the tertiary sector to dominate the regional economy in recent years. In terms of per capita GDP (€ 31,000), Salzburg is in second place among Austrian states after Vienna.

The size structure of Salzburg’s businesses is clearly dominated by small and medium-sized organisations. However, especially in the information and communication technologies (ICT) business, some international companies can be found in the region.

Salzburg has successfully laid the foundations in the areas of e-government, ICT labour skills, broadband and e-commerce to equip the region for sustainable economic growth in the rapidly changing global economy. The region has recognised the importance of effective e-government as the backbone of a business friendly environment, the need to pair labour skills to industry needs, getting the infrastructure right with broadband connection for all, and most importantly, getting it all to work in an e-commerce context.

The region of Salzburg, blessed by nature and primarily celebrated for its arts and culture, is now recognised as a European leader in the use of information and communication technologies as the platform for long-term economic growth.
